Children’s Religious Education Program

About the Program:

Sacred Heart Parish hopes to accompany parents in their role as primary educators of faith.

Our program aspires to form Disciples alive in Christ willing and able to share the Gospel message and growing in personal relationship with God. We believe in forming the child where they are. In that mindset our catechists strive to make classes fun and engaging with games, art activities, time for social sharing, and time for individual reflection. We believe that parents are the best teachers of the faith for their child and we make every effort to support parents in taking on that role.

Classes:

All students in grades Kindergarten through Eight who do not attend a Catholic parochial school are invited to participate in the Religious Education program.

Religious Education runs from September-April meeting on Sunday mornings from 9:30-10:45AM in the basement classrooms of the Parish Center. Classes are taught by volunteers from the parish and Notre Dame/ Saint Mary’s student volunteers.

Sacrament Preparation:

Students who are preparing to receive a Sacrament for the first time are expected to attend Religious Education classes two years in advance of their Sacrament.

For 2nd grade students receiving First Reconciliation and First Communion, they should be enrolled starting as a 1st grade student. Our 8th grade students preparing for Confirmation should be enrolled starting in 7th grade.

Sunday Mass:

Families are encouraged to join us at every Liturgical celebration at Sacred Heart Parish. In a special way, parents with young children are invited to the 11AM Sunday Mass in the Parish Center following Religious Education classes. Liturgical books for kids, children’s bulletin coloring sheets, and crayons are available and can be found on the bookshelf at the entrance to the chapel.

Get Involved:

Volunteers for the following are most appreciated:
Catechist - A love of sharing your faith with children is necessary!  A background in teaching is not needed. We aim to have two catechists per classroom to share the load of classroom management and lesson planning.
Substitute Catechist - Take over a class when the regular catechist is not able to teach.
Hospitality - Assist planning and set up for the children’s Nativity Play, May Crowning, Easter gifts, and First Communion.
Totus Tuus - Volunteer to help with our summer program for children.
